"Coral Gardens, Rangiroa"
2024 by Nansi Bielanski Gallup and David Gallup
38" x 124"  Oil on Wood

For us, this is more than a painting, it's a Manifesto.  It has taken each of us decades, plus another decade painting together, to find a style which runs the gamut from Abstract Expressionism through Impressionism and all the way to Academic Realism in one painting.  The result is shimmering and highly energized, which feels to us like the flickering light we see in shallow water.  At more than ten feet wide, it's difficult to appreciate on a small screen, so we are adding some detail shots and a video to try to give more of an impression of the piece.

If it is ignorance which gives us fear, then it is knowledge which gives us courage.  Once upon a time we, too, were terrified of sharks.  Urban dwellers that we were, we learned of these toothy nightmares from movie theater seats, our young minds soaking in the horror of a human encounter with a shark.  Thankfully, the human mind is flexible.  Through experience and deliberate education we have conquered that ignorance and now relish the opportunity to swim with these most graceful of creatures.  We have thrilled at watching them hunting tuna in Rangiroa, feeding on triggerfish in Belize, and sleeping in sea-caves in the Bahamas.  Our transformation from shark-fearing swimmers to shark-loving divers is proof to us every day that people can change, grow, and learn.  People, therefore, can overcome fear and live lives of courage.  That alone is enough to give us hope for the future of our oceans.

What does a memory look like?  How do we portray the human experience of a moment in a painting?  Memories are not studies in anatomy, nor do they obey rules of perspective.  If we leave the camera at home and go for a snorkel on a beautiful coral reef, what are the visual experiences we take with us?  These are some of the questions I have attempted to confront in "Pink Reef".

It has been said that there are two kinds of people: those who have looked into the eye of a whale, and those who have not.  I was reminded of this when I first swam with sea lions at Anacapa Island in California.  The intelligence, playfulness, and curiosity these animals displayed awakened in me a primal connection to our world which had long rested beneath the surface of my consciousness.  I saw a society which mirrored our own: playful pups blowing bubbles on me and tugging at my fins, cautious mothers calling them away from me, and protective bulls assessing whether I was a threat.  I saw in them, too, the desire to reach across the void of species separation, to communicate with the exotic other, the cousin from another planet.  Beyond that, it galvanized in me the desire to be a sentinel of the seas, protecting her and all of her creatures from humans who would carelessly do them harm.

This painting, quite simply, is about reinventing oneself in the middle of life.  A fresh way of seeing the same world.  This is what happened to us as we fell in love.  It is what happened to us as we learned together to dive and explore our world from beneath the surface.  It is what happened to us as artists as we shed the protective cloak of traditional and representational painting.  This painting is a visual representation of love, courage, and freedom.  It is the story of us becoming us.
