What is the difference between what is, and what we perceive?  Is there a better way of describing a human experience than with one eye shut in one instant (as a camera might)?  What does a memory look like?  These are some of the questions which led me to paint "Safety Stop with Anthias".  The lens flare is a reference to the idea that underwater images are almost always filtered through a camera's lens, even those which ultimately result in paintings.  The peculiarities of perception through a camera have permeated the mind of large parts of the public so much as to have replaced human perception of the underwater world entirely.  This began to disturb me when I noticed it happening to myself... photos and videos of dives began to replace my actual memory the moment I viewed them.  Now, I rarely take a camera with me on a dive at all.  My goal is to challenge the credentials of the camera in defining human perception in the underwater genre, as I try to erase its influence on my own visual experiences.
